Americano (Use 1 espresso shot and 2 parts of water)

There is a popular, but unconfirmed, belief that the name has its origins in World War 2 when American G.I.s in Europe would dilute espresso with hot water to approximate the coffee to which they were accustomed.

Cappuccino (Use 1 espresso shot steamed milk and milk foam)

The name comes from the Capuchin friars, referring to the colour of their habits. The Viennese bestowed the name Kapuziner in the 19th century, although their version included whipped cream, which the Italians found rather heavy.

Flat White (Use 1 espresso shot and steamed milk)

Australian food historian, Michael Symons, claims that the name "flat white", meaning an espresso with milk, originated in Sydney, Australia, in the mid-1980s, in contrast to the terms "short black" and "long black". The style was developed and standardised in Wellington, New Zealand, in the late 1980s.

Latte (Use 1 espresso shot and steamed milk and milk foam)

Coffee and milk have been part of European cuisine since the 17th century (there is no mention of milk in coffee pre 1600 in Turkey or in the Arab world). ‘Caffe latte', 'Milchkaffee', 'Cafe au lait' and 'Cafe con leche' are domestic terms of traditional ways of drinking coffee.

Macchiato (Use 1 espresso shot and milk foam)

Traditionally caffe macchiato is made with one shot of espresso, and the small amount of added milk was the 'stain'. However, later the 'stain' or 'spot' came to refer to the foamed milk that was put on top to indicate the beverage had milk in it.

Mocha (Use 1 espresso shot steamed milk, chocolate syrup and whipped cream)

Cafe mocha, in its most basic formulation, can also be referred to as hot chocolate with espresso added. Like cappuccino, cafe mochas typically contain the well-known milk froth on top, although, as is common with hot chocolate, they are sometimes served with whipped cream instead.

An affogato is a espresso-based beverage. It usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso. Some variations also include a shot of Amaretto or other liqueur. “Affogato al cafe” means “drowned in coffee” You can also make our version.

Using an electric mixer, beat the cream in a medium bowl until soft peaks form. Cover and refrigerate the whipped cream.

Use an espresso machine to make 4 shots of espresso. Scoop 1/2 cup of the gelato or ice cream into each of 4 dessert bowls or glasses. Pour 2 tablespoons or 1 shot of hot espresso over each. Top with the whipped cream and serve immediately.
